Dell PowerEdge 2950 and disk compatibility

$

Hi,

We have 2 Dell PowerEdge 2950 servers, both with a Perc 6 raid controller, 2 72Gb SAS drives and 2 2tb SATA drives. We were planning to extend the storage at the servers from 4Tb in raid 0 to 4 Tb in raid 1, so we managed to get 4 drives of 2Tb. Only one of those 4 drives is recognized as a 2Tb SATA disk, this disk is a Constellation ES with FW PA03.

The other 3 disks are Constellation ES.3 with firmware GA04, and are recognized as 136Gb SAS drives.

Is there any way to upgrade the servers so they will recognise the 3 disks as an 2TB SATA disk?

Thanks in advance!

R620 takes forever to boot. Slow at the BIOS screen.

Howdy,

I have an R620 that we are rebuilding and the server takes forever to boot up.  It sits at the BIOS screen and the bar takes 20+ minutes to crawl across the screen.  I ran the Lifecycle controller and it said the BIOS and other components are up to date.  Is there anything that would cause this?

There are no flash drives or anything connected to the server other than a mouse and the network cables.

Thanks

Does DSET or Support Assist include Windows Event Viewer logs?

$

Howdy,

We are rebuilding a machine that's been acting up and wanted to save off all the current information in case we need it.  We thought we could run DSET (or the new tool) to collect the info.  Can anyone confirm if either of those tools include Windows Event information and how we can view it after the fact?

I know I can open the file and bring up the main webpage but didn't see anything related to Windows Events but maybe I'm not looking in the right place...

Thanks.

Installing consumer PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD drive in T630

Can I install and boot from a Samsung 960 PRO M.2 drive using an adapter like this one? Since this would just use a normal PCIe slot I don't need a special chasis configuration either? Lastly, would this cause any issues if I have a H730 RAID controller installed but only have this drive for the time being?

PowerEdge R710 eGPU for compute and display

I have had some success using a refurbished R710 as a desktop with Debian Jessie.

The OS install was the easiest after getting the firmware-bnx2 package, extracting it and referencing it during OS install.  This way the ethernet cards were recognized.

Display was successful using a VGA to HDMI converter and scaler.  I am able to connect it to a Sony Bravia TV for display at 1366x768 at 60 FPS.

It's not the best display, but it works OK.  Except when running the ROS Gazebo (Robot Operating System Simulator) where it gets quite choppy and slow at refresh.

Incidentally I have used TensorFlow on GPU's on AWS for Machine Learning projects.  Therefore I was thinking of adding an eGPU that I can use for getting a better picture on the Sony TV and also do some TensorFlow work.

Any recommendations?

PowerEdge VRTX and M620 blade

$

Hello all,

I purchased a used VRTX chassis on eBay and seem to be having a ton of issues with it.

I first found out that the chassis midplane had grounded out and scorched the back of the blower cage as I went to re-seat them once I got into the CMC and saw the errors. The whole blower cage pulled out while trying to pull a single blower in doing so. What else I noticed is that there was no Midplane. I contacted the seller and they pulled apart another unit and sent me the midplane from it. the unit now sees the blowers and the power supplies and the I/O module but the I/O module is unknown and I cannot configure it. the Blowers all show critical 0 RPM, but are showing green before I power on the chassis and then go amber. I also have an M620 blade that I have purchased the PCI Mezz adapters for and in trying to install this get nothing? The blade does not show up as even installed in a slot!

Anyone have and recommendations on how to troubleshoot the issue(s) so I can get this working?

Thank you!

Bill

All,

At the moment I have received 2 dell R710's build same week.
Now in server 1 I have 2 CPU's and want to update from 8 to 16Gb.

Memory mode is Advanced ECC or Mirrored.
So I stack the following:

4x Samsung M391B5673EH1 in slots A2-A3-A5-A6
4x Samsung M393B5673EH1 in slots B2-B3-B5-B6

When booting the server no screen and following error in IDRAC;

0x81
Memory is detected but is not configurable.

Can someone help me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

Dell PE C6100/6105 Rack Rails question

$

I have a question about the proper mounting, installation, and use of the king slide rack rails that come with C6100s.

Each and every one of them that we have purchased coming off lease, whether purchased on eBay, or direct from the lease administrators have all come with the same rails. (pictures below).

My question is, as these are obviously the rails available for this server, is there any way to secure them other than the obvious screwing the rails into the posts, and then screwing the screws on the front of the power control panels on the 6100 into the posts as well?

Is there any way to screw these into the sides of the chassis itself?

We had a D.C. that while removing a hard drive caddy from a racked c6100 caused the chassis to fall about 3-4 inches.  they caught the chassis and it didn't strike anything, but I cannot figure out how this happened.

Now, the DC does have racks with 20th century round holes, rather than every rack made since 2007 that has square holes, so they sold us replacement posts with square holes.  The only thing I can think of is that the posts were not completely secured?

Is there any reason that while removing a HDD caddy the chassis should fall off the rails?

I'd appreciate all responses, especially those from Dell employees.

Dell R710 PCIE X16 Riser Board Frame

I have an R710 with a x8 Riser Board. I am hoping to replace that with an x16 board.

I found some online that are sold without the frame.

Is it safe to use the board with out the frame? Can the frame of the x8 be removed and used on the x16?

I am currently trying to configure iDrac on a company server and the LCD panel on the front seems to be permanently off. I was reading on this and it says the LCD cables may have gotten loose or I need to replace the control panel. Is there a way to configure the Idrac ip subnet and default gateway without the LCD? Could I restart the server and boot to it like in Idrac7?

Good Afternon.

I have a R710 PowerEdge server that now has 24GB (12x2GB in A1, A4, A2, A5, A3, A6 and B1, B4, B2, B5, B3, B6) in Memory Optimized mode. I wanted to add more 8GB of memory (4x2GB). I tried to put them into slots A7, A8 and B7, B8 or A8, A9 and B8, B9 but the server did not boot. In what position should I install the memories?

So I ordered a T330 last year. When I ordered the server I did not realize I selected the option to support only 4 of the 8 bays. It was a none issue before but I recently bought more drives to expand. Can someone let me know what parts I need to buy to upgrade?

The System Board heatsink is absent.

Is this the heat sink of the processor? or something else?

Local 960GB SSD is showing as non-SSD

Hi All,

I am having a R730, using ESXi 6.0 u2 and 2 x 960GB SSD (Product Number: PX05SVB096Y). The SSD is raid 10 with Perc 730p. All the hardware is compatible to ESXi 6.0u2.

However, the virtual disk is showing as non-ssd in the vcenter. I saw that there are a few VMware KB on marking the virtual disk as SSD. But I did not have to do that for my HP servers.

Is there anything that the factory failed to set?

Please kindly advise.

Thank you.
