Mixing spindle speeds on r710
Hello,
I have a r710 with 2 10k drives in an raid 10 configuration. When I got a spare replacement drive it was a 15k. Does anyone know if mixing a 10k and 15k drive in a raid 10 configuration would cause any problems?
Thanks
Memory Upgrade for R810 (4CPU- E7520)
Hi,
I have a R810 running on 4CPU- E7520 with 16x 2GB RAM.
I want to upgrade to 64GB and i am not reusing the 2GB RAM.
My vendor provided me with 4x 16GB RAM which after installation, displayed "no configurable memory detected". I suspect that the memory configuration is not supported.
I need help to confirm if the following memory configuration works.
- 4x 16GB (A1, B1, C1, D1)
- 8x 8GB (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D1, D2)
Thanks!

R815 Noise
Hi
I have just bought a 2nd hand R815 but am having major issues with the noise levels. It basically is far too noisy and constantly sounds like a jet taking off. I have 2 other R815 with more or less identical build specs (Same RAM and CPU's) and they are fairly quiet in comparison.
The R815 in question almost has like a pulsing feel if you touch the chasis (going down the chasis if that makes sense!) and sounds like it is vibrating inside in some way. I have tried to swap fans as well as the entire fan assembly with one from one of the other R815s that is working fine and this makes no difference to the noise. I have also changed the fan settings in the BIOS from maximum performance to minimum to avail. I have also thoroughly checked the inside for loose cabling etc and everything seems fine. The server is working perfectly fine in every way apart from this but the noise is simply unbearable.
If anyone has any help or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
T410 Need power for Video Card
Hi, I want to install a video card on my T410. While I can use the power cable for the DVD drive to power it, I dont really want to choose between a dvd drive and a video card. I have tried connecting one of the sata power slot on the board behind the drive bays but it does not supply any power to the DVD and the video card. Is there a way to get power for a video card?
Do poweredge t110 11 supports usb boot
I am trying to install centos in t110 ii tower server. Can i use my bootable pendrive on this.
PERC6/i (R710/2970) RAID battery shelf life
Hello,
We keep a stock of RAID batteries for PE R710. I am suspecting that most of them are quite old. Ones that have manufacturing dates on labels are from 2010-2011. That makes me worry that if we use them for repairs they will fail if not outright then after couple of months.
Things to consider:
- most likely were never deployed,
- Li-Ion cell shelf life limits,
- no special storage procedures, these weren't periodically recharged, might be completely drained,
- we have a sizeable quantity and I was informed that they are quite costly,
I was thinking about testing them and the best idea I've had was to put them into a chassis and run them through a learning cycle. Do you think it's even worth it or we should just replace them?
S130 sw-RAID controller limitations
Sorry for the disturbance, could You summarize the S130 controller (PE T130 server and so on) limitations? Let me start:
Maximum number of physical devices per controller: 8
Maximum physical device size: 2 TB
Maximum number of physical devices per virtual drive: 4 ???
Maximum number of virtual drives per controller: 1 ???
Maximum virtual device size: 2 TB ???
OS supported: Windows
Am I right with the written characteristics?
Thank You!
iDrac 7 in an R620
Hi,
We have the latest firmware available applied to our iDrac7, however our security team have been doing scans and found CVE-2013-4786, CVE-2013-4037 vulnerabilities against the latest firmware. Are there any plans to address these CVE's in a future update?
Many thanks
Martin
OpenManage or Essentials or what?
I am re-doing a R710 with fresh software. I intend to run HyperV with 2 VM's. I made drive C on the physical 120GB so it won't run out of space as Microsoft OS's do. I installed WS 2016 standard.
I am used to the apparently old version of OpenManage. It appears now there are two possibilities, OpenManage for Managed Node or OpenManage Essentials. I just want the hardware diagnostic features that older versions had and did not eat up a lot of disk space. Now I see "Essentials" requires over a GB and requires a bunch of software such as ASP.net, IIS, C++ runtime, etc. I don't want to fill up disk, just essential hardware diags on a stand-alone server. Further, now Openmanage Node has some cryptic popup messages about requiring a "HTTPS listener", is that IIS? When I select install listerner an an unreadable error message flashes.
To recap: I would like hardware diagnostics, including RAID, that is stand-alone and does not use up a huge amount of C drive on the physical. What should I use?
R820 build issues.
Less a question and more a record of what has been happening during an R820 build, three days in and counting. First, the hardware:
Poweredge R820 with 4 2.2GHz 8-core CPUs, 256GB RAM, PERC H710
Adding to the system:
8 WD Blue 500G SATA SSD drives
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS OS
MegaRAID 9380-8e (driving LTO7 library and SANS DIgital JBOD of 20 6TB WD Red)
Note, I've installed a similar configuration on an R710 without issue, albeit running Windows Server 2012 R2
First I install the (SSD) drives and the MegaRAID. Configure 8-disk RAID5 in PERC config. Then take my bootable Ubuntu USB stick and attempt install. System does not see the USB stick. I also note that occasionally the USB keyboard becomes non responsive, and I have to unplug it and plug it back in, then it recovers.
So, I burn Ubuntu to DVD and attempt again (mind you as you read along, each reboot is about 5 minutes). Boots to disk, install performed, looks great, reboot after installation, and receive an error:
attempt to read or write outside disk 'hd0'
So this puts me at a grub rescue prompt, and I proceed through all the different Ubuntu/grub forums I can find and try many things, none of which work. I saw a reference to large filesystems not being well handled by Ubuntu installs so next I...
...break the RAID, and create a 500GB RAID1 and the remaining 6 drives as RAID5. Attempt again, and install seems to work again, but I receive the same 'hd0' error. I had been doing a "BIOS" boot in setup, because UEFI did not seem to see any PERC filesystems for boot, but I tried going to UEFI anyway, and that failed to provide any results.
So I figure I can be a good boy and use the Lifecycle Controller to deploy. I go into the controller, skip RAID setup, and choose SLES 11 as the OS, then manual install, then approve that I do not have SLES (I have Ubuntu) and the system loads drivers and restarts. When it gets past the point of initializing firmware interfaces the activity LEDs on the SSD mirror start to blink continuously, and the screen remains blank. I have left it like this for over an hour, and nothing comes back.
So, I try again using Lifecycle controller, and this time I go into the RAID controller and configure just a 500G RAID0 with one of the drives, and (prior to boot) yanked the other 7 out so they would not delay the boot process of confuse the system. I proceed then as above with selecting SuSE as the OS of choice, drivers load, reboots, and proceeds (minutes later, after all the startup pain) to just continuously hold the LED on the single drive and again, the blank screen.
I have purchased two R820 systems, and I attempted to do the install on the other system (minus MegaRAID) to see if it was an issue with the system I had been working on, but the behavior exhibited was the exact same, so guessing that this is chronic to the R820 I thought I would report this on the forum so other people do not waste days of their lives messing with this when they could be taking their kids to the zoo or doing other things that are great in life rather than sitting in a cold computer room constantly being denied.
Anyway, figure my next step will be to dig out some old 73GB SAS spinners and see if this nice new hardware just prefers legacy drives. I'll update as I find out more.
Dell Poweredge 2950 III turn on but won't boot
So I normally shutdown my server at night, but then one day when I turned it on, the screen would not come up,. So I switched screens and had the same issue. Then I though maybe its the VGA output so I waited 10+ mins and it did not show up as connected to my network. Any suggestions? The fans are running btw
R620 CPU upgrade causing memory error
I upgraded the CPU on a PowerEdge R620 from a Quad core to an 8 core CPU, once I completed the upgrade I get a "ddr3 training failure - fpt - write dqdqs dimm a2" error. I have checked and have the latest bios update and switch the momory but the problem continues. I replaced the new cpu' with the old ones and the problem cleared. Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong.
OS Installs using LifeCycle Controller and USB drives
With the size of ISO’s coming from Microsoft – it no longer practical ordering a DVD drive when purchasing a new server. To me the logical alternative is a USB drive. But the lifecycle controller doesn’t treat a USB drive like an optical drive. So I’m relegated to booting from the USB to install the OS and wrestle with drivers – increasing installation time bigly.
Is there a better way?
PowerEdge T130, S130 controller alternatives
Goal: clarify the RAID controller upgrade from S130 to something with such characteristics:
- More than 2 VDs support;
- More than 2TB at VD support;
- More than 2TB per physical drive support;
- Not more than 4 physical drive support.
What I found:
- The model description page (at h t t p://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/productdetailstxn/poweredge-t130?~ck=bt) states the T130 supports "S130,H330,H730, H830";
- The server configuration page (at h t t p://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/productdetails/poweredge-t130/pe_t130_1200) allows H830 RAID option only (which is aimed for external JBOD storage);
- PERC compatibility summary (at h t t p://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/campaigns/dell-raid-controllers) lists most controllers are NotSupported for T130, and H730 and H330 controllers have no bracket to be mounted;
- PERC H330 datasheet (at h t t p://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/Dell-PowerEdge-RAID-Controller-H330.pdf) says the controller has "Full-length, low-profile" bracket.
My questions are:
- Does that mean the S130 RAID in T130 server might be upgraded with H830 controller + JBOD only?
- Does the Full-length, Full-profile bracket might be separately requested from Dell with the H330 or H730 controller for upgrade?

Dell M620 not posting
Hi,
I have just received a dell M620 server, however it will not post, could this be due to a possible fault with the SD reader? there are no SD modules installed into the server just CPUs 2xE5-2609 and 8 sticks of 4gb ram. i have also tried removing the SD reader and again no post from this server.
thanks
Dell M620 heatsink
Hi All,
I have noticed that the dell M620 have two versions of heatsinks. One is 55mm and the other is 77mm , I have both at hand, can someone explain what is the difference in them?
