Hello,

I have a R630 with iDRAC 8 Enterprise here.
Unfortunaltey I misscounted the network devices and forgot to include iDRAC.

Is it possible to use only one network cable to connect the R630 and have both OS and iDRAC working through it?

iDRAC also has work when the server is off.

How to update system firmware on PE 1950?

$

I have a PE 1950 running Server 2003 R2 32-bit SP2. Recently it has developed a problem where about once every 2 weeks it hangs and needs a reboot to get going again. Checking the Dell OpenManage Server Administration logs I can see that at the time it happens I'm getting the error: "processor sensor for CPU1, IERR was asserted" So far, the closest article I've found to resolving this is this one:

http://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukbsdt1/SLN298205/troubleshooting-cpu-internal-error--cpu-ierr--on-poweredge-servers?lang=EN

...which suggests "Update the system firmware as this can also resolve this error, as well as prevent future fault." but what exactly are the system drivers?  On the Dell website I can't see anything that correlates to that.  There's the BIOS upgrade, but not sure if that's what this article was referring to.

Can anyone advise me please?

PowerEdge R720 - PERC1 battery has failed

Hey guys,

We have a PowerEdge R720 server which is not running for last few months.

We have recently installed EXSi on the server.

We found some flaws in the server, the VM's inside the server gets shutdown often.

We came across the iDrac logs and came to know the PERC battery is logged as failed.

The battery works sometimes and again get a failure.

I suspect this gets to VM shutdown often on the server.

I also got the error log,

CPU1 internal server error.

CPU2 internal server error.

I request you guys to give a clear view on PERC1 battery failure causes as well CPU error.

PowerEdge 1800 don't boot up

Hello guys,

We have a PowerEdge 1800 server. We decided to upgrade it from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 R2. So we started to install Windows 2008 from scratch. The first problem was the RAID controller driver. We have got PERC 4/SC which seems bot supported by Windows 2008 R2. I found an article somewhere here in the forum that the Windows 2003 driver  might work. So I've tried it and worked so finally Windows 2008 R2 installed successfully. I upgraded the BIOS and BMC firmware and ran windows updates. After a couple of restart the server cannot boot up. After MPTBIOS-5.06.06 appears on the screen the server frozen I cannot do anything except switch it off. Doesn't matter if I press F2 or F10 doesn't go further. There are two ways when it goes further. First If I take off the RAID controller but it is useless as I cannot use the server. The other way if I unplug the power cables and waiting for an hour plug back in and it goes further but error messages pops up and the server rebooting itself and go back to the first scenario and have to switch it off.  (see attached screenshot)

Have someone any idea what causing this issue and any solution? I've burnt a diagnostics CD and I can run it if I remove the RAID controller but its not ideal. I thought might be some firmware issue but I cannot check. Is there any solution to check and update the firmware from a Boot CD?

Many thanks

How to Diagnose a Flashing Red/Amber Light on Dell PowerEdge 1950

The server has a flashing red/amber light in the back of it while all the HDD seem to be working fine. How can I run a diagnostics test to figure out what the flashing light means? This is windows Server 2003 on a Dell PowerEdge 1950.

I realize this is completely outdated and it will be replaced soon, but for now it is running a required application of ours so please don't scold too much (I'm only in charge of fixing it =))

Has Dell abandoned the concept of the LifeCycle Controller?

$

For awhile now there have been numerous posts about how absolutely horrid trying to do firmware updates via the Lifecycle Controller via ftp.dell.com has become.

The bandwidth or hardware devoted to ftp.dell.com does not remotely seem up to the task, when the site is actually up and you can connect, it seems to take many hours for it to actually download the catalog.

Numerous times I have seen on here, and just now when contacting support, it be suggested to download a bootable ISO that will do all the updates.

Is that the preferred suggested course of action to upgrade Dell hardware currently?
Once a month manually download an iso for each unique piece of hardware you are running?

I was forced to download the one for my new unboxed R730xd , and am astonished how bad it is.

There are 111 potential updates.  There is no central logic, or inventory collection.

Each and every updated package is executed sequentially.

Each and every update package , separately does "Collecting Inventory" ( which takes a non trivial amount of time  ).  If that specific update doesn't apply to your hardware, you get
"This Update package is not compatible with your system configuration"

Even the most basic engineering effort could be made to simplify and streamline this process, this is most bare bones out of the box possible solution that could have been devised.

The Lifecycle controller was sold as an innovative intelligent solution by Dell to completely automate the process, each step applied in the Dell approved order ... The initial marketing spiel used to sell it (the Lifecycle contoller)  used the old out dated modes of manually download  as an example of what an improvement this would be!

Has the Lifecycle controller method of updating via ftp just fallen out of favor?
Is the current vision/plan to just push out the bare bones ISO ?
Will there be improvements to the infrastructure that back ftp.dell.com?

Motherboard ID - Please Help

$

I have a client that has a PE2900 that the server software is reading that Fan 01 is not operating ( 0 rpm) so all fans are no longer redundant and running at high speed. However all fans are running including Fan 01 ... I have swapped fans and still same reading and fast speed.

I have troubleshooted this and updated the Bios and Firmware as suggested, no change. Checked connections of fans are all fine.

There seems to be only two solutions to this ... either add resistors to the fans to slow them down and allow the system to continue thinking Fan01 is out, or replace the entire mother board to replace the sensor that is apparently gone bad ...

First, I think that is crazy there is not a way to replace the sensor, but it is what it is ...

I need to know when getting a new motherboard for a 2900 are there different ones that may get me the wrong one ?

I looked in the server admin software and could not find a listing for the motherboard exactly ?

Here is what is listed and wondering if the first one or last one listed is the motherboard ? If not how do I make sure I get the same motherboard?

Mezzanine card slots (?)

$

Hi, recently I've been looking into blade servers, my old M600 specifically.

What I want to ask here is what are the mezzanine card slots in blade servers? Seen here: http://imgur.com/a/2lMcU

What I've gotten after looking around abit is that they are like expansion slots where I can insert types of cards like network cards to further enhance or compensate for my blade functions?

For example this post answered that they are just an expansion possibility like extra PCI slots: https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28179068/Mezzanine-cards-in-Blades.html

So am I actually able to use a blade without inserting any cards in these slots, leaving them empty?

Also, concerning network interface cards, blades themselves do have these right? So I wouldn't need extra ones in the mezzanine slots if the one on my blade itself is sufficient.

Thanks alot!

PowerEdge R900 motherboard upgrading CPU's

$

I have an R900 with a C764H motherboard and four XEON E7330 CPU's.

These CPU's are not supported by VMWare ESXi 6.5  however the XEON E74xx series is.

1) the 7330 is a quad-core, 2.4GHz, 2x3MB L2 Cache.  the 7440 is also a quad-core, 2.4Ghz, 2.3MB L2 cache.  i assume i could simply drop in 7440's without any problem.  is this correct?

2) the E7450 is a 6-core, 2.4GHz, 3x3MB L3 cache CPU.  can i drop these in, or do i also need to change the motherboard to one that works with 6-core CPU's?

3) if the answer to #2 is a yes (that i do not need to change motherboards), could i use X7460 which is the same as the E7450, but with a faster clock (2.66GHz instead of 2.4GHz)?  or do i need a different motherboard that supports the faster clock speed?

THanks
