PowerEdge R520 mixed memory configuration

Hello,

I have a dual-processor PowerEdge R520, and I want to upgrade the memory, while retaining as many of my existing DIMMs as I can (all, preferably!). It currently has 32GB in 8x 4GB ECC DDR3 RDIMMs,1333MHz low volt single rank (Dell-331-4422). I'm looking at adding 2x 16GB ECC DDR3 RDIMMs, 1333 MHz  low-volt dual rank, PC3-10600. The R520 has three memory channels per processor, supporting up to 12 DIMMs I'm looking at the document ps2q09-20080414-Benson.pdf regarding Dell R520 memory configuration, but it's not clear to me how I should plan to configure the memory modules I have, or whether this upgrade is a good choice. Can I mix 16GB and 4GB DIMMs in the same channel? Which channel should use the larger DIMMs? Should I plan to purchase all new DIMMs if I want to increase the memory to 64GB? Can you advise?

Thanks!

Disk Speeds

Hi,

I note the following:

NOTE: The default setting for Disk Cache Policy for virtual disks based on SATA drives is Enabled; and for virtual disks based on SAS drives is Disabled.

Why is the SAS cache disabled? I thought it would make the disk faster to Enable it.

Is there a comprehensive White Paper discussing the various RAID settings for the latest controllers?

Thx,

T320 USB and Video

I have a PE T320 tower that has faithfully served me for almost 3 years. It was setup and placed in a network closet to be used as a server and hasn't been touched since. Until today...

I needed to make a couple of changes and connected a monitor plus kb and mouse. There's no video coming from the VGA port and it is a known good monitor and cable. Monitor turns on but just a black screen, no video. I rebooted the unit and get same result, even during boot and POST.

Also the rear USB ports will not work, none of them, front two work just fine.

I downed the box and moved NVRAM clear jumper, then powered up to boot.

Power off and reset jumper, booted back up with same result on both counts, video and USB.

Anyone have any ideas short of a new server or MB?

Thanks!

Virtual Disk commands using RACADM

Hi,

We wish to interrogate our fleet (Several generations of servers and controllers, including R730XDs) for their Storage Read and Write Policies.

We want to be able to change those policies if they do not meet our criteria.

I cannot find the specific RACADM commands to do the above. I have downloaded the paper RAID And Storage Configuration using RACADM Commands in iDRAC7, but cannot see the correct commands to use.

Can someone pls point me to the correct commands, starting with the interrogation command to see the status of the Read and Write Policies?

Thx for your help,

Purchasing RAM for PowerEdge R715

I have a Dell server (specs below) which contains 2 types of RAM. This is causing boot issues and I'd like to replace all the RAM to resolve the problem.

I don't know whether I should be purchasing RDIMM or UDIMM and if there is a need to choose over different options such as 2Rx4 or 2Rx8.

Explanations for understanding are welcome, RAM recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Dell PowerEdge R715 running:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

AMD Opteron processor 6272.2 2.10 GHz (2 Processors)

R720 front LCD display is not working. Can't find DRAC IP.

We have a remote location where a user made me aware of a server that had a fan running at "Mach5".  So I had the user look at the front display to find the DRAC IP address because my predecessor didn't think it was a good idea to keep documentation. The LCD isn't showing any information.  We rebooted the server last night remotely.  It would not boot back up as it was prompting to "press the f1 key to continue" this morning, but rather than giving me the reason why it was prompting, he just pressed the key to get the server booted up.  The front LCD display still isn't working.  The fan is still running at "Mach5", which I assume is 100% and I still don't know how to access the iDrac.

Please assist.

Hello

I have dell poweredge server 2900 and it has 8 slots for hard drive.  I have 5 slots of hard drive and rest of them are empty. slot 0 1 2 are working fine but rest of hard drive is not detecting. I checked with external hard drive machine and those are perfectly fine.

Only those 2 hard drive is not working in slots. I tried with all empty slots but still not detecting.

Can you please tell me at this stage what I have to look and what need to be replace?

R210 showing powerup diags 1 and 4

I have an R210 server that was built from a barebones chassis from eBay. The PS/Ram/CPU/MB were also bought on eBay. My question is this: IS there *any* other item from the above list that could cause the powerup diags 1 and 4 lamps to light? I know that the 1-4 combination indicates mainboard failure, but here's the thing. I've recieved two allegedly tested mainboards from the same eBay vendor that exhibited the same error on powerup. I returned those and bought another board from another non-eBay vendor and it exhibited the SAME error on powerup. I tried removing the ram and powering the system up, I got the expected "1" light indicating no ram present. I supported Dell servers in my job prior to retirement, but never really had to worry as we had onsite warrantee on all of our server systems. I find it hard to believe that 3 mainboards from two different vendors would exhibit the same failure/error code.. Hoping there is something else that is causing this error...

Thanks

Dave

I'm planning to buy the PowerEdge R530 rack server but I was wondering how many pins the RAM modules need. Does someone know this? I tried to find an answer on my own but couldn't find it anywhere.

R510 Questions: iDrac Setup, OSMA, vFlash, FreeNAS

$

Hello all,

Thanks in advance for helping out a complete newbie to server architecture. I'm an experienced custom desktop PC builder for almost two decades, but I recently purchased a used R510 and have realized I have much to learn! This server is being used in my home, not a business setting.

Objectives:

  • Setup remote management, as this system will be headless once installed in a rack
  • Install FreeNAS on mirrored 2.5" HDD's in the internal drive caddy
  • Use all 12 front 3.5" drive bays for 8TB WD Reds, this will be my FreeNAS array

Background:

Here's an ongoing thread I have over at the FreeNAS forums, in case it is useful for reference, or anyone is trying to emulate what I'm attempting and find it useful reading.

Here's a link to my Dell Service Tag so you can see how the server was configured from Dell.

The server currently is setup in a RAID configuration using the H700 with 10 drives combined into a single virtual drive. That drive has Windows Server 2016 Standard installed and activated on it. There's also an iDrac Enterprise card installed.

Questions:

  • My goal is to place this server in a rack, but still want to keep an eye on thermals, power consumption, software updates and so forth over my home network. Once configured, I want to make the system completely headless.

The system already has iDrac Enterprise card installed, but no vFlash SD card. I'd like to make a backup of the server's current system configuration before I make any changes to it. There are 10 Dell SAS HDD's (lower capacity than the WD Red's I want to use for FreeNAS) currently installed with the RAID config for Windows Server 2016.

    • Is there any easy way to export this current hardware configuration via USB thumb drive before I remove all the Dell drives and swap them out with the WD Reds?

I tried exporting the server configuration, but it gave me an error message about needing a licensed Dell vFlash card. I had just a standard SD card in the slot, but the only other option that seemed to be available was export to CDROM, of which there was none attached to the system.

How does one select USB thumb drives as an export destination for server configuration files?

I'd like to save a copy of the current RAID config, plus Windows Server installation information in case I ever wanted to repurpose the server away from FreeNAS and swap out drives to go back to its original Windows Server 2016 configuration.

How do I setup the iDrac management to use OMSA?

Once FreeNAS (based upon FreeBSD) is installed, I won't have any Windows environment to install Windows-based utilities. Based on my reading (someone correct me if I'm wrong!) OMSA needs to be installed on both the management station (my primary Windows 10 desktop) and on the R510 too, inside of Windows.

Can one take full advantage of the remote management features without having an operating system installed? If so, how does one start to configure this?

I've read that iDrac Enterprise works in a pre-OS environment, which is exactly how I'd want to access it once FreeNAS is installed. What needs to be installed/configured on the R510 to make this happen? What needs to be installed/configured on my Windows 10 desktop to access it once configured, or can everything on the management desktop be done over a web-browser?

Those are my main concerns right now, and if anyone can point a complete server beginner in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. I realize I have much to learn. Thank you for your assistance!

Dell PowerEdge R710 intermittent network slowness on Broadcom BCM5709C NetExtreme II ethernet

Sometimes there is network slowness (connected 1GB) while transferring files in network from one server to Dell R710. The transfer drops from 100-90 Mbps to 6-15Mbps and after sometime recovers itself. Updated the Ethernet drivers still it isn't resolved the issue.

Any clues.

Thanks,

PowerEdge R220 II - Max hard disk size?

$

Hi,

I'm looking to get a couple more years out of the R220 II we have.  Hard disk technology has moved on since 2014 and thus I was wondering how big a hard disk I can install into the server.  The documentation says 6Tb but I suspect that was when 3Tb disks were still new.  Ideally I'd like to install a couple of 6Tb 3.5" SATA drives.

Thoughts?

Thanks
Rob

Hi,

I have a Dell C6300, I'd like to monitor the shared power supplies. Unfortunately, iDRAC doesn't see the PSUs. Therefore I'm asking here if someone would have a solution to propose.

Thanks in advance!

Perc H700 Dell R415 Raid 5 Firmware Update

$

Hello,

I have had a PE 415 that originally came with a Perc 300 controller.  It was in production for several years.  I recently removed it from production because of HD failures.  I have new HD that I purchased and the I couldn't get the drives to work in the Perc 300 so I purchased a Perc H700.  The controller saw all of the drives and I was able to configure a RAID 5 and load up Windows 2012 R2.  It was working great until I loaded up Server Administration.  I ran Server administration and it says that I needed a firmware update for the Perc H700.  I downloaded the release 12.10.7-0001, A13 but I error out every time that I try and run it.  The error is "This Update Package is not compatible with your system configuration".  I tried to reinstall using Windows 2008 R2 and then running this Firmware update again but I get the same error.  I also tried a Raid 6 configuration and still the same problem.

I dont want to put the server back into production with it having an error.  If someone has ideas on what I can do to get by this that would be great.  I watched a video on how to update the firmware before I am loaded to Windows but it was not very clear on how to make create the payload package or the commands to run or how to boot to the USB.

Thanks

Jared

Not able to ping default gateway from blade server

$

Dear All,

I'm facing connectivity issue with M630 blade server. I m not able to ping default gateway from blade server. We have MXL 10/40Gbe Switch IO Module on back panel of M1000e chassis.

We have connected two fiber cable from cisco core switch to dell I/O module and configured this port as LACP on both the end i.e on dell switch as well as cisco switch. We have configured VLAN i.e. 210 on cisco switch as well as on dell switch.

We can ping the default gateway from Dell switch but we cannot reach the default gateway from any of the blade server.

Even we can ping the blade server with each other but we cannot reach the default gateway from any of the servers.

Appreciate your quick respond.

Hakim. B

PowerEdge T110 stuck in a loop maybe, cannot go into Setup F2 or F10 or F11 Error Code 2 Light on fornt

Hi all,

Anyone come across this.

My old PowerEdge T110 refuses to go to setup F2 or F10 System services of F11 Boot options for Bios.

I am getting a number 2 light on front panel diagnostic error lights , have checked each interface card pci separately, taken battery out to try and clear settings.  No success.

Yesterday I did get it to boot to old Windows 2008 system on a Dell hard drive 500 GB size. Which is what came with system, even though no raid configuration was set, it still booted with the S100 cables Blue ones connected to that drive. Maybe I fluked it, as I had used a Live Image ISO Linux Boot CD first.

Cannot repat this at all.

Any suggestions guys?

Specs of system are

www.dell.com/.../configuration

Thanks

Phil
